Midnapore (WB): Chhatradhar Mahato, the
former convenor of the People`s Committee Against Police
Atrocities, has gone on a hunger strike along with other
prisoners at the Central Jail here.

Mahato, who was among 220 prisoners arrested on the
charge of having links with Maoists, went on the hunger strike
on Friday night, jail sources said.

The prisoners alleged that they had been arrested on
false charges and demanded that they be immediately released.

Mahato was arrested from Birkar village near Lalgarh in
West Midnapore district on September 26, 2009 by policemen
posing as journalists.

On January 3 this year, charges were brought against him
under the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.

He had allegedly formed the PCPA which had spearheaded
the tribal agitation against what its members called police
excesses following the landmine blast targeted at Chief
Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee`s convoy on November 2, 1980
at Salboni in West Midnapore district.
