Pointing to Mamata, CPI (M) welcomes SC ruling on Section 66A of IT Act

Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Brinda Karat on Tuesday said that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee should get the message over striking down of the controversial Section 66A of the IT Act by the Supreme Court.

New Delhi: Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Brinda Karat on Tuesday said that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee should get the message over striking down of the controversial Section 66A of the IT Act by the Supreme Court.

``I welcome this judgment. Even we had earlier demanded to scrap this act. There are already some restrictions given in the constitution so there was no need of this clause. We just expect that leaders like Mamata Banerjee get the message,`` said Karat .

Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court struck down the IT Act Section 66A, terming it 'unconstitutional'.

According to reports, the apex court ruled that the section falls outside Article 19(2), which relates to Freedom of Speech, and thus has to be struck down in its entirety.
