Police vehicles damaged by irate villagers in Malda

Malda: Police vehicles were on Monday attacked by irate villagers in a Malda village when the mob demonstrated against the late arrival of police force even after receiving information of a dacoity attempt at a gramin bank.

Window screens of the police vehicles were smashed and cars damaged by the agitated locals when the police personnel from Harishchandrapur police station went to Bhimgal village, about 90 km from here, said Abhsishek Modi, Additional SP, Malda.

Chanchal Sub-Divisional Police Officer K D Acahrya rushed to the village to defuse the situation.

Although the dacoits were not yet arrested the situation was now under control, Modi said.

There were reports that some policemen of Harishchandrapur police station were allegedly confined to a house by the villagers, though the ASP did not confirm it.

All the police personnel who had gone to the village are "safe", he said.

"We are trying our best to arrest them," the ASP said.

A dacoity attempt at a branch of Bangiya Gramin Vikas Bank at Bhimgal village sparked off the chain of events when the police personnel arrived late after being informed of the incident by the locals.
