Kolkata: The city on Wednesday witnessed the coldest day of the season as mercury plummeted to 11 degrees Celsius on the back of a moderate cold wave sweeping across south Bengal.

The city's minimum temperature was three degrees below normal, the local weather office said.

It said the average minimum temperature in south Bengal districts was hovering between seven and 10 degrees Celsius with the prospect of further slide in the next 24 hours.

With the northerly wind blowing hard from northern India, where cold wave conditions prevail, most of the districts in south Bengal experienced a chill, it said.

The minimum temperature plummeted to 7.1 deg C at Sriniketan in Birbhum district, 7.2 degrees at Uluberia in Howrah district, eight deg c at Bankura, 9.1 degrees at Krishnagar in Nadia district and 9.7 degrees at Midnapore.

Popular sea-resort Digha and adjoining Contai also shivered under the cold snap.

The MeT office said though Kalimpong in north Bengal recorded a low of five deg C, other areas like Malda and Coochbehar fared better compared to south Bengal, registering 10.6 degrees and 11.4 degrees respectively.

Meanwhile, dense fog in the northern and northeastern region caused inordinate delay in the arrival of trains today at Howrah and Sealdah stations, ranging between nine and 13 hours, Eastern Railway sources said.
