Halim on Tuesday directed Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee to
make a statement in the House on the steps taken in connection
with the caning of a city school student which allegedly led
him to commit suicide.
RSP member Md Refatullah, who raised the issue in the
House, demanded justice for the family of the victim and steps
to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
The Speaker, then, directed government chief whip Syed Md
Masiha to ensure that a statement by the chief minister on the
steps taken by the government be made in the House.
Thirteen-year-old Rouvanjit Rawla, a Class VIII student
of La Martiniere for Boys School, allegedly committed suicide
by hanging himself at his home after being caned by the school
principal on February 12 for indiscipline, according to a
complaint lodged by the father of the child.
The charges are being investigated by Kolkata Police and
National Commission for Protection of Child Rights.
The state government had announced earlier that it was
planning to set up an appropriate body to deal with the issue
of corporal punishment.
