Ghaziabad: An investigating team from West Bengal recorded the statement of Bandana Sarkar, who had accused former CBI director Vijay Shankar of being involved in the alleged murder of her husband, a key witness in the Nithari killings.

The statements of Jatin Sarkar`s wife Bandana Sarkar and son Sonu Sarkar was recorded yesterday before their advocate Khalid Khan in Nithari town in UP`s Noida district, Investigating Officer Sandeep Ganguli told a news agency.

The couple`s 20-year-old daughter Pinki Sarkar was one of the 40-odd victims raped and murdered as part of the gruesome killings in Nithari.

Jatin Sarkar`s body was found floating in a pond in West Bengal`s Murshidabad district on September 1, 2007.

Though police dismissed Jatin`s death as a case of drowning, Bandana had filed a PIL in the apex court alleging that her husband was in possession of "confessional"
statements of key accused Moninder Singh Pandher and was killed at the instance of Vijay Shankar and SJM Gilani who wanted to shield Pandher.

The Supreme Court had then ordered registration of a case of murder against the CBI and police officers.

The investigating team will also question the accused in a few days.

Bandna Sarkar has alleged that there was a wound on the head of her husband who was a swimmer and killed in knee deep water.
