TC leader shot at, improvised cannons found from CPI-M office

A local Trinamool Congress leader was shot at and seriously wounded, while a huge number of illegal firearms, including improvised canons, were seized from a CPI-M office in West Midnapore on Wednewsday, police said.

from a CPI-M office in West Midnapore on Wednewsday, police said.

Sohrabuddin was shot at and injured while he was going
to the market at Chandrakona Road under Garbeta police station
in the district, police said.
Mansur Ali, believed to be a close aide of former
CPI-M minister Susanta Ghosh, allegedly shot Sohrabuddin in
the foot then in the chest and other parts of the body at
close range, police sources said, adding Ali was arrested.

Sohrabuddin was first taken to a primary health centre
and then to the Midnapore Hospital before being referred to
the SSKM Hospital here.
Meanwhile, in a raid on the Kharkusma CPI-M party
office under Garbeta police station, police and joint forces
seized 35 improvised cannons, 16 muskets, 20 pistols, 55
revolver parts and 155 bullets.

The party office was just across the road from the
house of CPI-M leader Sukur Ali, wanted by CBI in connection
with the Chota Angaria carnage in the district of January 4,
2001, when a number of people were burnt alive, though none of
the bodies were ever found.

Eight more guns and ammunition were seized from the
Malikbandh area.

SP Manoj Verma said that so far 1,006 illegal firearms
and 855 rounds of ammunition have been seized. He said that
146 people have been arrested in connection with the seizure
of illegal firearms.

Three single barrel guns and a rifle were also seized
at Jaipur in Bankura district.

On the other hand, a peaceful 12-hour bandh was held
in Murshidabad in protest against burning to death of two
CPI-M supporters at Kapasdanga village in Murshidabad district
allegedly by Congress supporters on Tuesday night, police
said.
