Burdwan: Three CPI(M) workers, who were engaged in wall graffiti, were Saturday thrashed allegedly by Trinamool Congress activists in Burdwan district, police said.

The incident occurred at Bajepratapur area in ward no: 4 when the workers were writing slogans in favour of the CPI(M) candidate from Burdwan south seat, the Zonal Secretary of CPI(M) Tapas Sarkar said.

Sarkar alleged that the TMC councillor from the ward, Mohammed Ali and the husband of the TMC councillor from ward no: 5, Iftikar Ali alias Pappu, and party worker Saheb, armed with firearms and sharp weapons, accosted their rival workers and forcibly took them to the nearby TMC office where they were badly beaten up.

The local people intervened but were told by the TMC workers that the three were anti-socials and had snatched a chain belonging to a woman, known to be a TMC worker, Sarkar said.

The police later rescued the three CPI(M) workers, who were admitted to a private nursing home.

The CPI(M) registered an FIR with Burdwan police station and said they would bring the matter to the notice of the election commission.

Burdwan Superintendent of Police Gaurav Sharma said investigations would be launched.
