Kolkata: Senior Trinamool Congress leader
Sobhan Chatterjee was on Sunday chosen by the party for the post
of the mayor of Kolkata Municipal Corporation.
Chatterjee, a close aide of Mamata Banerjee, was elected
at the meeting of the Trinamool Congress Municipal Party, which
has 95 Councillors elected in the last week`s Municipal polls.
With his election, Chatterjee overtook another Banerjee
aide Firhad Hakim and Sashi Panja, daughter of deceased
Trinamool leader Ajit Panja.
Banerjee herself was present at the meeting along with
party senior vice-president Subrata Mukherjee, state president
Subrata Bakshi and Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly,
The meeting also elected Farzana Alam as Deputy Mayor,
Sacchidananda Bag as KMC chairman and Manzur Iqbal as leader
of the party in the KMC.
Chatterjee and Alam will have to face another election
at the KMC on June 16 by all the 141 KMC Councillors, before
they are confirmed in their posts.
