New Delhi: West Bengal Chief Minister and
TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee on Friday said her party did not want
to topple the UPA government, of which it is a constituent,
but insisted the Congress-led dispensation should also do its
work rpt work properly, especially in controlling prices.
Banerjee, who won the CNN-IBN award in the Indian of the
Year (Politics) category, said at the felicitation programme
that she had no intention of withdrawing support to the
central government.
"We do not want the government to be toppled but the
government must also see that they do their job properly,"
Banerjee said in reply to a question.
"...But price rise should be controlled," she added.
TMC had threatened to withdraw support when petrol prices
were hiked recently. The key UPA ally also forced the
government to hold back FDI in multi-brand retail.
Asked what was more difficult, winning an election or
running a government, Banerjee said she cannot forget the 34-
year rule of Left parties in her state.
"There are so many problems (in running the government).
This is a challenging job," she said.
The fiery leader said had she not entered politics, she
would have still served the people in some way.
Asked if she agrees with the popular perception that
she is a powerful politician, Banerjee said "I am a simple
person. I am a commoner. I continue to remain a commoner."
However, she maintained that whatever commitment she
makes, she tries to deliver as credibility of a political
party is very important.
