Two arrested for firing at police SI in West Bengal

Two persons were arrested for their alleged involvement in the firing in which a police sub-inspector was injured soon after voting ended for the city civic board on Saturday, police said on Sunday.

Kolkata: Two persons were arrested for their alleged involvement in the firing in which a police sub-inspector was injured soon after voting ended for the city civic board on Saturday, police said on Sunday.

"Four persons were detained from the Singhi Bagan area of Jorasanko area under Girish Park police station late last night for their involvement in the incident. Two of them were released while two others were arrested," a senior police officer said.

The two were remanded to police custody till April 24 by the city civil court where they were produced.

Police sub-inspector Jagannath Mondal was injured after he was hit by a bullet during a clash allegedly between two political parties at Singhi Bagan soon after yesterday's voting for Kolkata Municipal Corporation.

Later, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited Mondal at the hospital and said his condition was stable.

About the incident, she had said there was a scuffle at Girish Park and Mondal was hit by a bullet on his back.
