Midnapore (WB): The Trinamool Congress
candidate from Ghatal assembly constituency in West Midnapore
Shankar Dolui was on Wednesday assaulted during campaign by some
people allegedly belonging to CPI(M) at Sultanpur area, in yet
another attack on a contestant in poll-bound West Bengal.
Official sources said Dolui suffered injuries in the
attack and was taken to Ghatal hospital.
Sources said the CPI(M) anchal pradhan Mritunjay
Chakraborty, under Sultanpur gram panchayat area, has been
detained in connection with the attack following complaints by
Trinamool alleged that Chakraborty led a mob of CPI(M)
supporters which suddenly started beating up Dolui with sticks
as he was talking to people in front of the gram panchayat
Trinamool supporters were now demonstrating at Ghatal
police station demanding arrest of all those involved in the
Trinamool MP Shubendu Adhikary went to the area and
arrangements were being made to shift Dolui to a Kolkata
hospital, party sources said.
Sub-Divisional Officer A Adhikary said police have
been asked to take all measures against those involved.
A report about the incident has been sent to the
Election Commission, the sources said.
The district CPI(M) denied its members involvement
in the incident and attributed it to Trinamool `infighting.`
On April four a Trinamool activist was killed when he
tried to shield party candidate for Jamuria assembly
constituency Prabhat Chhatypadhyay from a group led by a local
coal mafia in Burdwan district.
