Kolkata: Backing West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, WBPCC chief Pradip Bhattacharjee on Tuesday said government employees `ignoring` the 24-hour shutdown call today was a `new chapter` for the state.
"A large number of government employees ignored the strike call, scripting a new chapter for the state. Bandhs cannot solve any problem. On the contrary they pose problems for the people, particularly daily wage earners," Bhatttacherjee said to sources.
Noting that he did not think that the government directive to employees to report for duty or face a break in service was responsible for their attendance, he said,
"Warning is one thing.
"The primary reason behind government employees reporting for duty is because they have realised the futility of bandh culture which has ruined the state.
"The state has witnessed repeated bandhs in the past three decades." He said that though the strike affected the industrial belt, it had no impact here.
