West Bengal: Arrested student's union leader alleges harassment in custody

Midnapore: The arrested Chhatra Parishad General Secretary of a West Midnapore college on Monday alleged before a court here of mental and physical torture on him and his family by police.

The court asked the police submit all records related to the case within two days.

Chief Judicial Magistrate Manjusree Mondal asked the investigating officer of the case to furnish all documents pertaining to the arrest of Soumen Ganguly, General Secretary of the students' union of Sabong Sajanikanta College.

Soumen had been picked up in connection with the unnatural death of Krishna Prasad Jana, a third year BA student in the college on August 7, allegedly during a clash between Chhatra Parishad and Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) members.

Ganguly's counsel Harisadhan Bhattaharya in his affidavit contended that his client was being mentally tortured in police custody and his family was being pressurised to present certain facts and turn of events in a particular way.

Meanwhile, Congress leaders Manas Bhuniya, local MLA, and Abdul Mannan today visited the Chhatra Parishad dharna site before the college building and warned Trinamool Congress will meet the same fate as CPI(M) if they did not mend their ways.
