Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday ordered a CBI probe into the brutal gang-rape of a 71-year-old nun in Nadia district.

Calling the March 14 incident as a “serious matter”, Mamata took to Twitter to announce that the investigation has been handed over to the CBI.

“Considering the seriousness and sensitivity of the case, I have decided to entrust investigation of the case to CBI,” she tweeted.

The West Bengal Chief Minister also assured of complete cooperation and assistance to the CBI for probe.

Defending her decision to entrust the investigation to CBI, Mamata furthet tweeted, "Police are making their best efforts. Considering the fact that the place is very close to border area I have decided to entrust case to CBI.”

At least 15 people have been detained in connection with the case. However, no arrest has been made so far.

The announcement was made by Mamata ahead of her meeting with the president of Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) Cardinal Baselios Cleemis at 4:45 pm today.

The Cardinal arrived in Ranaghat today to meet the 71-year-old nun, who was gang-raped by dacoits, and said that authorities should ensure that justice is done and made visible.

“Such inhuman acts should be stopped. We request the authorities to ensure that justice is done and made visible,” he said while speaking to mediapersons.

The horrific incident took place when a group of dacoits broke into the Convent of Jesus and Mary in Ranaghat and raped the nun after gagging her.

The gang also decamped with Rs 12 lakh which was kept in the almirah locker.

The CCTV footage has also shown the faces of the four accused allegedly involved in the crime.

Even though several people have been detained in connection with the case, no arrest has been made by police so far.
