London: A staggering 265 copies of Anne Frank`s famous `The Diary of a Young Girl` and other books about the Holocaust victim have been vandalized in public libraries of Tokyo.

Librarians at 31 public libraries have reported that dozens of pages from theses books have been ripped out, the Independent reported.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga called the vandalism "shameful" and said that Japan would not tolerate such acts.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center, a US-based Jewish human rights organization, has said in a statement that these acts of vandalism is part of a hate campaign and urged the authorities to step up efforts to find those who are responsible.
Japanese police are currently investigating the incidents, though the motive behind damaging the books is still unclear.
