A major haul of cannabis weighing 4.9 tonnes and with an estimated worth of $742 million was seized in Turkey, Xinhua reported Wednesday.

Ankara: A major haul of cannabis weighing 4.9 tonnes and with an estimated worth of $742 million was seized in Turkey, Xinhua reported Wednesday.

The drive was launched by Turkish security forces in Diyarbakir province`s Lice border town Tuesday with the assistance of 20 helicopters and several unmanned aerial vehicles, a government statement said.

Turkey has long been a key transit point along the drug smuggling route from Asia and the Middle East to Europe.
