The troops killed 25 rebels in the towns of Shannan and A'as in the northwestern province of Idlib, and 29 others in the towns of Atshan and Sakik in the central province of Hama, Xinhua reported.

Also Monday, government forces carried out airstrikes on rebel convoys in the rugged al-Qalamoun region on the borders with Lebanon, killing dozens of rebels.

The Syrian air force also struck a checkpoint, manned by rebel fighters, in the countryside of the northern province of Aleppo, the report added.

In the central province of Homs, government troops killed dozens of rebels Monday, SANA news agency reported.
