6.1 quake hits Aleutian island area

A strong 6.1 magnitude earthquake registered on Wednesday near the Aleutian Andreanof Islands of Alaska, the US Geological Service said.

Washington: A strong 6.1 magnitude earthquake
registered on Wednesday near the Aleutian Andreanof Islands of
Alaska, the US Geological Service said.
The USGS said in its preliminary assessment that the
epicentre was 143 kilometres west-southwest of Adak, Alaska,
on the edge of the Pacific Ocean and Bering Sea, or some 2,000
kilometres (1,279 miles) west of Anchorage, Alaska.
The quake hit at 1258 GMT with a depth of 44 kilometres.

The agency said a tsunami warning was not expected.
