New Delhi: The Adjutant General's branch of the Army has not yet changed the date of birth of Gen V K Singh in its records as it is still waiting for the official copy of the order of the Supreme Court in this regard.

On February 10, Supreme Court had forced the Army chief to withdraw his petition on the age issue and asked him to maintain May 10, 1950 as his date of birth and not a year later, as contended by him.

The Adjutant General's Branch has not yet received the copy of the Supreme Court order and appropriate action will be taken once it is received, Army sources said here.

In the age row involving Gen V K Singh, the Adjutant General's Branch has maintained his date of birth as May 10, 1951 whereas the Military Secretary's branch shows it as a year earlier.

The Defence Ministry on two occasions has asked the Adjutant General's branch to change the date of birth to May 10, 1951 but it refused to do so on both the occasions.

The first order was given on July 21 and the second one was received by the Army on January 23.

In its January 23 order, the Defence Ministry had asked the Adjutant General's Branch to file a compliance report also but that has not yet been provided to it, sources said.

The Military Secretary's branch is also expected to issue a Retirement Warning Letter to the Army Chief in the next few days informing him that his retirement date is May 31, 2012.

Its high time that the General resigns because he has not been able to get justice from the highest court in India. The matter was not complicated enough evidence was available to show that the Chief was born in 1951 and not 1950 as the Govt was insisting. The entire issue saying that he accepted 1950 as his year of birth while being appointed as a corps commander and Army commander has really no meaning. Does one conclude that if he was 1951 born he would not get these appointments.

Shame for not taking care of such a high priority action item, that needed urgent attention. If the bureaucrats don`t have the courage to resolve such an issue then one wonder, how they can handle difficult issues. Inefficiency and ineffectiveness is thy name, the current democratic system. Need a real change in the system. Onkar
