Al Qaeda suspect goes on trial in Germany

Prosecutors believe that Rami Makanesi was trained in Waziristan.

Frankfurt: A 25-year-old German-Syrian who authorities believe trained in an al Qaeda paramilitary camp in Pakistan goes on trial in Germany, where he faces charges of membership in a terror organisation.
Prosecutors believe that Rami Makanesi trained in Pakistan`s lawless Waziristan border region before joining "al Qaeda`s fight against the Pakistani military."

His trial begins on Thursday in Frankfurt state court, nearly a week after German police detained three suspected al Qaeda members on suspicion of plotting an attack with explosives.

Prosecutors say that before his arrest by Pakistani security forces in June, Makanesi had planned to return to Germany to raise funds for al Qaeda and be in place for future terrorist operations. He was later extradited to Germany.
