American injured in blast in Beijing

An American was injured in an explosion near a subway station in downtown Beijing, even as Chinese investigators are yet to determine the cause of the blast.

explosion near a subway station on Thursday in downtown Beijing,
even as Chinese investigators are yet to determine the
cause of the blast.

The blast occurred at 3:20 pm today beside a newspaper
stand near the Dongzhimen subway station in Dongcheng District
in the city, police said in a press release.

A 30-year-old American studying in China, "who
happened to pass by," was slightly injured in the leg and had
been rushed to a nearby hospital, state run Xinhua reported.

The explosion came as a surprise and to some extent
sparked fears as such incidents are rare in well guarded
Chinese Capital.

Investigations were to determine who could have caused
it, reports here said.
