Washington: A Nigerian man was reportedly arrested by authorities at the Detroit airport from a North West airplane from Amsterdam on Sunday afternoon following complaints from fellow passengers that he became verbally disruptive and barricaded himself in the bathroom.

Several police vehicles and a police command unit have surrounded the plane at Detroit's Metro Airport after the pilot requested emergency help.

The plane was having the same flight number as that involved in the Christmas Day incident when a terror suspect unsuccessfully tried to blow it up mid-air.

Metro Airport spokesman John Witner said there was a report of suspicious activity on the Delta-Northwest flight 253 from Amsterdam.

Flight crew requested that law enforcement meet the aircraft after a passenger on the plane became verbally disruptive, said Delta spokeswoman, Susan Elliott.

A law enforcement official said the man was Nigerian and had locked himself in the airliner's bathroom, the MSNBC news channel reported.

All 257 passengers and 12 crew have been evacuated after the flight landed safely in Detroit at 12:34 pm local time.

Officials said President Barack Obama has been informed about the incident.
