Buenos Aires: A town in Argentina's western
Andes region, San Juan, was rattled on Tuesday by a second moderate
quake in as many days, though no casualties or damage were
reported.
The 4.6-magnitude temblor occurred 15 kilometres from San
Juan at a depth of 117 kilometres, the National Institute for
Earthquake Prevention said.
A 5.5-magnitude quake shuddered through the ground 30
kilometres northwest of the town at a similar depth yesterday.
The Andes run north-south along South America on a fault
line that frequently causes earthquakes.
San Juan has been hit several times in the past, the
worst being in 1944 when 8,000 people were killed by a
7.4-magnitude upheaval, according to the US Geological Survey.
