Ashton Carter confirmed as US secretary of defense

Ashton Carter was confirmed as secretary defense Thursday, taking on the job of supervising the war against Islamic State jihadists in the final two years of Barack Obama`s presidency.

Washington: Ashton Carter was confirmed as secretary defense Thursday, taking on the job of supervising the war against Islamic State jihadists in the final two years of Barack Obama`s presidency.

Carter, an accomplished Pentagon veteran, was easily confirmed to replace Chuck Hagel as secretary of defense. With the roll call still underway, at least 81 senators voted for Carter, with four Republicans opposed.
