Paris: At least two people were killed and three others severely injured on Wednesday when an avalanche engulfed skiers in the French Alps, including of a group of school children from Lyon and their teacher.

The avalanche occurred at about 1500 GMT and hit a black-rated ski trail at the Deux-Alpes resort in the department of Isere, eastern France, which had been closed to the public, Xinhua quoted France Info, French news radio channel, as saying.

A group of around 10 schoolchildren from a secondary school from Lyon and their teacher who took the trail were engulfed by the avalanche.
