Nairobi: The African Union called on Ivory Coast`s Laurent Gbagbo to hand over power immediately to presidential claimant Alassane Ouattara on Friday to spare civilians from further bloodshed.
AU Commission Chairman Jean Ping said in a statement that Gbagbo had rejected all initiatives to end the crisis peacefully.
"(Ping) urges Mr Gbagbo to immediately hand over power to President Alassane Ouattara, in order to shorten the suffering of the Ivorians," the statement said.
