Jerusalem: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will hold an emergency meeting with both Israel and Gaza on Saturday to discuss the escalating conflict in the region that has killed hundreds of people.

He is due to visit Gaza today and hold discussions with the warring side to find a solution to end the violence.

The meeting is taking place after Israel stepped up the offensive by launching troops and tanks into the Gaza region with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warning of “significant expansion” of the ongoing Operation Protective Edge, the BBC reported.
Retaliating to the attacks, militant group Hamas threatened that Israel will have to pay price for the invasion.

Meanwhile, the number of people caught in the crossfire between Israel and Hamas seeking refugee have increased to 40,000, the United Nations has reportedly stated.
They have taken taken refuge in around 34 UN shelters so far, as per BBC report.
