Washington: Former CIA chief General (retired) David Petraeus will testify before a Congressional committee on the handling of the September 11 assault on the US embassy in Libya, days after he resigned over an extra marital affair.

Petraeus will appear before the committee in a closed door testimonial during which he will answer questions on the CIA`s knowledge and handling of the attack that left US Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other American dead after an anti-Islam film caused much outrage in the Muslim world.

"Petraeus will testify before the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence on Benghzai on Friday," the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence said.

The former CIA director has voluntarily agreed to testify before the Congressional committee.

Meanwhile, FBI Director Robert Mueller testified before Senate Intelligence Committee on the circumstances leading to the resignation of Petraeus.

"Today (Thursday) we received a comprehensive briefing from FBI Director Robert Mueller and Deputy Director Sean Joyce on the events that led to the resignation of CIA Director David Petraeus," said Dianne Feinstein, the committee chairman in a statement.

"They answered our questions. Because this is an ongoing FBI investigation, we will have no further comment," he said.

Petraeus resigned abruptly last week citing an extra marital affair in a scandal that also engulfed America`s commander in Afghanistan Gen John Allen.
