Wellington: New Zealand Finance Minister Bill English is all set to become the country's next prime minister after his competitors dropped out of the race.

Both Health Minister Jonathan Coleman and Police Minister Judith Collins dropped out of the race after it became clear English had more support.

New Zealand is looking for a new leader following the surprise resignation of John Key as prime minister earlier this week.

"It's going to allow us as a government to re-set, look forward and provide New Zealand with good government after John Key," Reuters quoted English as saying.
