Maiduguri: Authorities in Nigeria say one police officer has been killed when gunmen from a radical Islamist sect attacked a rural police station to free a detained adherent of the group.
Yobe state police commissioner Emmanuel Onireti said two other police officers were injured in the attack on Wednesday night in Damagum, a northeast city where the sect known as Boko Haram once preached before becoming an extremist group terrorising Nigeria`s north.
A Boko Haram spokesman claimed the attack on Thursday and said three of its members died in the assault. The attack also left other buildings in the town in ruins.
Boko Haram is waging an increasingly bloody fight against Nigeria`s weak central government in its effort to enact strict Shariah law across the multiethnic nation of more than 160 million people and free its imprisoned members.
