Here is a timeline of his trial:

March 4: The trial begins. Tsarnaev stands accused of carrying out the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings that killed three and injured 264 others.

He is also charged in the death of a polcie officer, shot wheil he was on the run.

The 21-year-old, who grew up in the United States but was born in Kyrgyzstan to a Chechen family, allegedly carried out the attacks with his 26-year-old brother, Tamerlan, who was killed in a shootout with police.

Tsarnaev had pleaded not guilty to 30 federal charges in connection with the attacks and the killing.

March 5: In one of the trial`s most gripping days of testimony, Bill Richard, a father, describes in excruciating detail how his little boy was killed, his young daughter lost a leg and his wife was blinded in one eye in the bombings.

March 30: After four weeks, the prosecution rests its case.

March 31: Tsarnaev`s lawyers wrap up their defense.

April 7: Jurors begin deliberations to determine whether Tsarnaev was guilty on the 30 counts. If convicted, 17 of the charges carry the possibility of the death penalty, which could be handed down during the trial`s sentencing phase.

April 8: After around 11 hours of deliberation, the 12-member panel convicts Tsarnaev on all 30 counts relating to the April 15, 2013 bombings, the murder of the police officer, a car jacking and a shootout while on the run.

April 10: Judge George O`Toole rules the trial`s sentencing phase will begin on April 21.

April 17: In an emotional letter published in the Boston Globe, Richard and his wife ask prosecutors to take the death penalty off the table, saying the punishment "could bring years of appeals and prolong reliving the most painful day of our lives."

April 21: Tsarnaev returns to court for the start of his sentencing trial by the same 12-member panel that convicted him.

May 4: Tsarnaev shows emotion in court for the first time, wiping his eyes as a distraught aunt is removed from the courtroom, too overcome by emotion to testify.

May 13: The jury begins deliberations on whether to sentence Tsarnaev to death or life in prison.

May 15: After more than 14 hours of deliberations, the jury sentences Tsarnaev to death on six of the 17 capital counts.
