Sofia: As tens of thousands of Bulgarians staged nationwide protests against price rise and austerity, Bulgarian PM Boiko Borisov announced on Wednesday that he would resign.
Borisov said that he would be resigning after a regular Cabinet meeting later in the day, as he "will not participate in a government under which police are beating people".
"We have dignity and honor. It is the people who put us in power and we give it back to them today," Prime Minister Boyko Borisov told parliament.
Earlier, the Prime Minister of EU’s poorest member country tried to placate the protesters by promising to cut the prices.
He also revoked the license of the country`s largest foreign-controlled power supplier.
But government’s efforts failed to pacify protesters filled the streets chanting slogans against the government, complaining against high electricity costs and austerity.
Police clashed with the protesters with twenty-five people ending up injured in the hospitals, reported the BBC.
