Sydney: Mersane Warria, the mother of the seven of the eight slain children, was arrested by the police on suspicion of murder on Saturday, a day after their bodies were found in Cairns, Australia.
The 37-year-old has not yet been formally charged for the crime and is under police guard at Cairns Base Hospital, as per news reports.
The brutal murders shocked the nation when the bodies of seven children, aged between 18 months and 14 years were found in the house on Friday.
The bodies were discovered after their 20-year-old brother arrived at home.
While news reports state that the children were stabbed, the cause of the death will be ascertained after the post mortem report.
Warria was also found injured in the house where her seven children and a niece were found killed.
Despite speculations that the family was being investigated by social services, police has dismissed the claims.
Prime Minister Tony Abbott called the incident “an unspeakable crime.”
The mass murders comes days after a gunman siege at a cafe in Sydney which left three people dead.
