Paris: France's first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy is being coy about whether her husband will
stand in next year's presidential election, telling a French
magazine "I don't know if my husband will run."
The 43-year-old expectant mother also tells Madame Figaro
in a magazine interview to be published this weekend that she
receives a lot of help as Nicolas Sarkozy's wife, and doesn't
see why having a baby will keep her from her working.
In comments made available to reporters Thursday, the
former-supermodel-turned-singer said: "I don't have a hard
life, don't have to take maternity leave, or take public
transportation at 6 a.m. like 90 per cent of my compatriots."
Italian-born Bruni-Sarkozy is expected to give birth
sometime after October 1. The child will be the first baby
born to a sitting President in modern French history. The
couple have generally kept quiet about the pregnancy.
A spokeswoman for the Elysee Palace said Thursday that
Sarkozy has not recently specified when he will announce his
plans. French political observers widely expect him to seek a
second term.
Sarkozy, who has low ratings in opinion polls, has said
in the past he would decide during "the autumn of 2011"
whether or not to run again.
