China applauds Syria for accepting UN peace plan

China applauded Syrian government for accepting UN special envoy Kofi Annan`s plan to end the bloodshed in the country.

Beijing: China on Wednesday applauded Syrian
government for accepting UN special envoy Kofi Annan`s plan to
end the bloodshed in the country.

"China believes the acceptance of the six-point plan is
helpful for promoting a political resolution to the Syrian
issue," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said
today.

Hong said China hopes the Syrian government and all
parties concerned would seize this important opportunity,
support and cooperate with Annan`s mediation efforts, and,
therefore, help ensure the effective implementation of the
plan and promote a political resolution process for the Syrian
issue.

Annan`s six-point plan for Syria includes proposals for a
ceasefire include, a daily halt to fighting for the delivery
of humanitarian aid and treatment for the wounded, as well as
talks between the government and the opposition.
Hong`s comments came a day after Annan met Chinese
Premier Wen Jiabao and sought China`s support for his mission.
"Wen gave massive boost to Anna`s mission," the state-run
China Daily said in its report today.

Wen said the Syrian government and parties involved
should respond positively to mediation of Annan, who came to
China after his visit to Moscow.

Wen reiterated that the safety of the Syrian people and
halting the violence was the priority as this would allow the
opportunity for dialogue and a peaceful resolution.

Annan sought the help of China which along with Russia
had vetoed UNSC resolutions on Syria in the recent times.
