China clamps down on anti-Japan protests, 24 held

The suspects were allegedly involved in violent incidents like smashing a Japanese-brand car, shop windows, etc.

Beijing: Police in south China`s metropolis of Guangzhou have detained 18 people for allegedly indulging in violence during the anti-Japan protests.

With these arrests in the capital of Guangdong Province, the total of persons taken into custody so far in the country has reached to 24.

The suspects were allegedly involved in several violent incidents including smashing a Japanese-brand car, shop windows and billboards, although most of the demonstrators behaved rationally during the protests, the press office of the Guangzhou Public Security Bureau.

Police are investigating the acts of violence and have sought public help in providing clues and evidence, state run Xinhua newsagncy reported.

Police in east China`s port city of Qingdao had announced earlier that six people were detained for alleged violent acts committed during anti-Japan protests that occurred last Saturday.

A man surnamed Qi allegedly broke into a Japanese store, smashed several counters and stole digital cameras and sneakers, the police said.

Another five arrested suspects allegedly attacked auto shops and smashed or set fire to Japanese cars, according to the police.

In Beijing also, police are investigating the mobbing of US Ambassador`s car by anti-Japanese protesters which was reportedly damaged.

Meanwhile several Japanese stores, which were closed following anti-Japanese demonstrations after Japan`s move to buy the disputed islands, have started opening up, the Xinhua report.
