China detains over 90,000 people Beijing: Chinese police have detained over 90,000 suspects by November in a crackdown on several offences, especially food and drug safety cases.

The Ministry of Public Security campaign aims at targeting illegal food producers, factories producing counterfeit goods and markets for the disposal of stolen goods, pornography, gambling and drug trafficking.

The news- agency quoted a Chinese Ministry statement, as saying that 28,000 venues, which were earlier used for illegal activities have been sealed during the first 100 days of the campaign.

The statement highlighted the government’s progress in curbing manufacturing and sale of clenbuterol, an illegal fat-burning drug that is sometimes illegally used as an additive in pig feed, and "gutter oil," a reprocessed cooking oil that is illegally produced using waste oil from restaurants.

The statement pointed out that Chinese police had gathered over 100,000 tips through citizens’ phone calls, e-mails and microblog posts.

The Chinese Ministry also vowed to establish "permanent mechanisms" to eliminate these offences.
