Beijing: An explosion due to fire in a leaking oil pipeline killed at least 35 people and wounded dozens others in the city of Qingdao in China on Friday.
As per the authorities, the workers were trying to repair the pipeline when the explosion occurred. The injured were taken to a nearby hospital. The 176-km pipeline, which links oil depots in Huangdao to Weifang city, is owned by China`s largest oil refiner, Sinopec.
While the oil supply to the pipeline has been shut down, barricades have been set up to stop the oil from entering the sea.
Although authorities have denied any possible terrorism, yet they maintained that the incident remains under investigation. They further told that over 100 fire fighters were involved in putting out the fire.
Images on social networking sites show shattered concrete slabs and dark smoke rising from the port city.
