China restricts food imports from Japan Beijing: China has banned the import of some Japanese food products amid fears of radiation contamination due to the ongoing crisis at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan.

The food ban covers dairy, vegetables and water-based products as well as fruit from the Japanese prefectures of Fukushima, Tochigi, Gunma, Ibaraki and Chiba, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said.

"Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant leak accident has already resulted in serious pollution to local food and agricultural products," the Shanghai Daily quoted the agency as saying in a statement.

Japan has detected excessive radioactive matter in agricultural products from many regions, and has adopted rules prohibiting the distribution of such food products, the agency said.

The country has stopped shipments of vegetables and milk from near the stricken nuclear plant.

Singapore, Australia, US, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau have all restricted food imports from Japan.
