China to keep birth rate low: President

Hu Jintao said China should adhere to basic state policy of family planning.

Beijing: China, which has a population of over 1.3 billion, will improve its current family planning policy and maintain a low birth rate, President Hu Jintao said.

Population is a key factor in economic and social development that concerns the success of China`s reform and opening up, as well as the future of the Chinese nation, Xinhua quoted Hu as saying.

China is a big developing country, which is a fundamental reality that should be kept in mind when making decisions and taking actions, he said and added that China should adhere to the basic state policy of family planning and deal with its population problems with the aim of achieving all-round development of people.
Problems concerning the birth sex ratio should be addressed, and gender equity efforts enhanced, he said at a meeting here Tuesday.
