China to provide $4.7 mn flood assistance to Pak Beijing: China on Tuesday announced a USD 4.7 million assistance to provide relief to Pakistan flood victims, in response to call for international aid by Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari.

China will provide emergency humanitarian aid worth 30 million yuan (about USD 4.7 million) to Pakistan as a token of friendship between the two countries, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Jiang Yu told a media briefing here today.

"We hope the (relief) materials will be helpful for Pakistan in overcoming its calamity," Jiang said, adding that China believes the Pakistani government and people can conquer the flood and rebuild their homes.

Zardari had last week appealed to the international community to provide assistance for millions of people who have been affected by monsoon rains and flooding in southern Pakistan.

China had provided over USD 200 million aid during the last year's floods in Pakistan, regarded as one of the largest relief assistance Beijing has provided to any country.
