Chinese Premier to attend ASEM, China-EU summits

China is now the EU`s second largest trading partner behind the US.

Beijing: Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao will embark on an official visit to Greece, Belgium, Italy and Turkey from October 02-09, during which he is scheduled to attend the ASEM and the China-EU summit, the official media said here on Monday.

Besides the 8th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), to be held in Brussels from October 04-06, the Chinese Premier will also attend the China-European Union summit, Chinese Foreign Ministry said.

ASEM is an informal process of dialogue and cooperation, bringing together the 27 EU member states and the European Commission with 16 Asian countries and the ASEAN Secretariat.

A host of issues, especially EU`s concerns over rising Chinese exports which touched EUR 214.7 billion last year against EU`s export of EUR 81.7 billion to China as well as persistent complaints of EU and US over slow appreciation of Chinese Yuan against US dollar and EU were expected to come up during the talks.

China, which over took Japan as the second largest economy of the world this year, is now the EU`s second largest trading partner behind the US and the biggest source of imports. The EU is China`s biggest trading partner.

The Foreign Ministry officials said Wen will also attend events celebrating the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Italy and the opening ceremony of Chinese Culture Year during his stay in that country.

China will hold a series of activities in more than 10 Italian cities, including Rome, Florence and Milan, to display its traditional culture and progresses in modern times.
