Chinese prosecutors oppose light sentence for rape accused

Chinese prosecutors today appealed against a five-year prison term given to an official convicted of raping a four-year-old girl.

Beijing: Chinese prosecutors today appealed against a five-year prison term given to an official convicted of raping a four-year-old girl.
"The sentencing was clearly inappropriate," said the Zhaotong City Procuratorate of Yunnan Province.

The sentencing last month sparked a public outcry online, with thousands of people saying the prison term was too light.

On September 24, the court in Daguan County found Guo Yuchi, an official who managed government staff, guilty of raping the minor girl.

The victim`s family asked the procuratorate in Zhaotong, which administers Daguan, to lodge an appeal against the sentence.

The procuratorate appealed in Zhaotong City Intermediate People`s Court, a higher court to Daguan County Court, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
