Melbourne: The Australian government has been sued by the relatives of asylum seekers which were killed in a shipwreck off Christmas Island in 2010.

The families of the victims are initiating legal action against the government after they accused the government of not doing enough to save the victims.
The tragic incident took place in 2010 when around 50 Iraqi, Irani and Kurdish asylum seekers drowned after their boat hit the rocks.

Immigration minister Scott Morrison criticised the lawsuit calling it “shameful” and said that the charges are like from “someone who has been saved from a fire suing the firemen,” the BBC reported.
An enquiry was launched into the incident after the tragedy and an Iranian people-smuggler was jailed for 14 years in 2010.
