Washington: Secretary of State Hillary Rodham
Clinton says the US is in direct competition with China and
risks losing influence as the communist country "wines and
dines" leaders in the resource-rich Pacific.

Clinton made the unusually strong comments before the
Senate Committee on Foreign Relations as she bemoaned cuts to
the US aid program sought by the Republican lawmakers.
She told today`s hearing: "We are in a competition for
influence with China."

Clinton accused China of supporting a dictatorial regime
in Fiji. She said China had brought all the leaders of small
Pacific nations to Beijing and "wined them and dined them."
She said the US aid program was key to the strategic
interest of maintaining US leadership in the world.
