Bogota: A judge issued an arrest order Tuesday for the former head of Colombia`s secret police over her alleged involvement in a domestic spying scandal.
The order is aimed at former domestic intelligence chief Maria del Pilar Hurtado. Hurtado, who says she is innocent, has been living in exile in Panama since November 2010 and that country has said it will maintain her asylum.
The DAS security agency led by Hurtado spied on judges, journalists and political opponents of Colombian President Alvaro Uribe, who left office last August. At least 20 former DAS officials have been jailed in the scandal.
While ordering the arrest of Hurtado, Judge Luis Fernando Ramirez denied a prosecution request to put ex-Uribe chief of staff Bernardo Moreno in jail pendingg his trial in the case.
The judge noted Moreno has remained in his South American homeland and is not a danger to society. Moreno, who was in the courtroom for the ruling, maintains he is innocent.
