The death toll from a tanker truck explosion in southern Mexico jumped to 18 on Monday, 11 days after people tried to steal fuel from the vehicle after it crashed.

The fatalities have been rising steadily since the March 26 blast in the town of Huimanguillo, Tabasco state, which killed two people on the spot and injured around 20 others.

The Tabasco state prosecutor`s office said the latest victim was a 38-year-old woman who was taken to the morgue on Monday.

The tanker had crashed into trees when local residents rushed to steal its fuel, ignoring warnings from rescue workers to stay away from the site.
