Disgraced NBC anchor to stay at network

Former star NBC anchor Brian Williams, who was suspended and investigated after he admitted embellishing an Iraq war story, will stay with the network despite his news scandals, CNN reported Wednesday.

Washington: Former star NBC anchor Brian Williams, who was suspended and investigated after he admitted embellishing an Iraq war story, will stay with the network despite his news scandals, CNN reported Wednesday.

After his suspension ends in August, Williams will return to NBC in a lesser capacity and the network may make an announcement about the once-vaunted anchor Thursday, CNN reported, citing anonymous sources.

In February, NBC suspended Williams, 56, for six months and began an internal investigation after his embellishment admission and amid accusations he stretched the truth on other times as well.

Williams earned around $10 million a year as the host of the station`s coveted nightly news program that had an audience of an estimated nine million people.

Williams admitted that a story about taking fire in Iraq while in a helicopter was not true, after criticism from troops who were present at the time.

When announcing his suspension the network said his on-air "misrepresentation" of his Iraq story was "wrong and completely inappropriate," adding: "We have concerns about comments that occurred outside NBC news while Brian was talking about his experiences in the field."

At the time of his suspension, NBC was facing increasing pressure to fire the anchor. But CNN reports Williams may return in a reporting position.
