Egypt: `Hosni Mubarak put on ventilator`

Ousted Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak`s health has continuously deteriorated three days after a court sentenced him to life imprisonment.

Cairo: Ousted Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak has been placed on mechanical ventilation following complaints of difficulty breathing, an official at Cairo`s Torah Prison has said.

Mubarak`s health has continuously deteriorated three days after a court sentenced him to life imprisonment in connection with the killing of protesters, a security official said. According to CBS News, the official at Torah Prison said that Mubarak collapsed several times, and his condition worsened after his wife and former first lady Suzanne Mubarak visited him on Monday.
Prison authorities turned down a request by Mubarak to bring two of his personal doctors to oversee his condition, the official said. However, the authorities agreed to transfer his son Gamal, also a prisoner, to a nearby cell to be close to him. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the press.

Other sources at the Tora Prison Hospital have said that Mubarak has been suffering from severe depression. Mubarak "has lost weight and is having difficulty walking, but doctors managed to convince him to take his medicine, which he was initially refusing”, according to media reports.

Mubarak was sentenced on Saturday for failing to stop killings of protesters in the 2011 uprising.
